OSCA Welcomes the Peterborough Student Co-op

The mission of the Peterborough Student Co-operative is to establish a cooperative residence in downtown Peterborough at affordable rates for students. There is currently a housing shortage for students in Peterborough and this initiative was started by Trent students seeking to address the lack of housing options. This initiative has been building since November of 2009 and currently has approximately 100 founding members from Trent University, the Peterborough Community, members of the administration and members of other co-operatives. The operational revenue of the organization is funded by a student levy paid by all full-time undergraduates at Trent University. The Board of Directors are currently working with a business consultant with the top three potential sites for the co-operative. Click Here to learn more about each of the three sites.

OSCA is By Students, For Students.

OSCA is comprised of 5 student co-operative organizations in 4 cities across Ontario. Situated in Kingston, Waterloo, Guelph and Toronto, our student housing co-ops currently serve members from over nine post-secondary institutions. Efforts to organize in other cities are ongoing.

Co-op’s are not only about housing. Guelph, for instance, runs a Bookstore and campus-based website. Co-op’s are about harnessing students collective power, and the possibilities are endless. It’s about making student life better. Cheaper. More convenient.

Co-op’s have a rich tradition in Canada and around the world.  Co-op’s have millions of members world-wide, and here in Ontario, student co-ops have been around for almost a century.  The mandate is to serve students, not generate profits. In housing, this provides students with a positive alternative to other less affordable forms of student rentals.

The success of student co-op’s lies in member participation. By contributing to a variety of work duties ranging from serving meals, to cleaning, to committee work or community service, members help keep prices down while creating a unique and exciting place to live.
