Trying to find a decent place to live while in university or college can be discouraging. But in five cities across Ontario, there's a positive alternative that can help: student co-operative housing.
Student co-ops are built, owned, and operated by students just like you. In Ontario, student co-ops serve students attending Queen's University, George Brown College, St. Lawrence College, Ontario College of Art, Ryerson Polytechnical Institute, University of Toronto, University of Guelph, Conestoga College, University of Waterloo, and Wilfred Laurier University.
Co-op's have been a part of students lives for close to a century. They cultivate a community atmosphere. They host social events. Perhaps most importantly, they encourage members to take responsibility for their own living environments.
Student Co-op's are a better deal because their mandate is to serve students, not make big profits. You can claim your occupancy fee through the Ontario Property Tax Credit adding to the savings. And another reason they're affordable is that the deal includes your participation in the upkeep and running of the place. Sound reasonable?
Members participate in a variety of work duties ranging from serving meals, to cleaning, to maintenance, to committee work and community service. Hours are flexible and take into account your class schedule, interests and skills.
