Science 44 Co-op was founded in 1941 by nine students from Queen's Science class of 1944. It was a practical response to a housing shortage in Kingston at the time. Back then they had one male residence (Collins House) that housed 17 students. The first women's residence was opened in 1944 (Boucher House). Now we have 20 co-ed houses that support 150 members and an extensive meal plan.
In 1967 the original Co-op had financial difficulties and was taken over amicably by another group of students with some funding from Queen's Alma Mater Society and a CMHC mortgage. The name remained and the original members got priority for rooms (there was another housing shortage that year). For the first time in 1987 we had a non-meal plan division. Today, we have evolved into our current organisation of 20 houses and fully equipped main kitchen and dinning hall for the meal-plan members. Currently 17 of our houses participate in the meal plan.
